The demand for gluten-free products keeps on growing, with more people becoming aware of gluten intolerance or simply wanting to reduce the amount of gluten in their diet.

Coeliac Awareness Week runs from 15th to 21st May this year, and since the very beginning, Suma has always aimed to cater for special dietary requirements. Our gluten-free range contains over 1,600 different products all certified gluten-free, from every day essentials to special treats, alongside 1,000s of naturally gluten-free products too.

Alex, our Suma buyer who looks after bakery, cereals and snack products says:

“We’ve got a wide range of gluten-free products, including all the best sellers. Doves Farm’s free-from flours are incredibly popular, while Engevita flakes (known fondly as ‘nooch’) are becoming a must-have for gluten-free and vegan diets. Products like Lizi’s gluten-free granola and the range of Nakd bars, for example, are stand-out products that have everything a gluten version has – and more.”

“We’re seeing the quality of free-from products improving across the board, with the standard of baking products, ingredients and cereals all increased. Probably the biggest change has been in snacks, where a mix of innovation, demand for healthier snacks and parents wanting gluten-free options for their kids has meant there’s a really wide range to choose from.”

A gluten-free diet is essential for people with coeliac disease; an auto-immune disease caused by a reaction of the immune system to gluten—a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. Sales in this area have never been bigger with many non-coeliacs reporting a range of health benefits after adopting a gluten-free diet. Many basic foods are naturally gluten-free. Foods which require substituting with a gluten-free alternative include bread, pasta, cereals, biscuits, cakes, pies and sauces.
