New Ecoleaf Environmentally Friendly Cleaning Products from Suma

Submitted by on January 7, 2010 – 2:59 pm37 Comments

Ecoleaf – Cleaning with a clean conscience

Last year Suma launched its own unique range of environmentally friendly household cleaning products that was non-toxic and safe for use around the home. We were dissatisfied with other environmentally friendly cleaning products because we felt they either didn’t work, were too expensive, weren’t cruelty free or were manufactured abroad.

We have now added to the existing range (toilet cleaner, multisurface cleaner, laundry liquid, fabric conditioner, hand soap and washing-up liquid) and added washing powder, stain remover and a concentrated washing up liquid.  The washing powder is packed into plastic tubs with tight sealing lids to keep your powder dry (we suggest you you refill your tub from the 10kg paper sack available –  but be sure to store the sack away from kitchens and other wet, humid or damp areas). We have brought out the concentrated washing-up liquid following customer feedback – its greener as well to transport smaller bottles.

Vegan and Cruelty Free cleaning products made in the UK

  •  This range is actually produced in the UK.
  • Humane household product standard – Cruelty free products checked by the BUAV who campaign against animal experiments.
  • Vegan – products contain nothing of animal origin and are registered with the Vegan Society.
  • Recyclable logo – All containers are recyclable.
  • Competitively priced
  • Only available to  independent shops, not available in the Supermarkets

The Ecoleaf range of cleaning products is derived from plant extracts and is based on biodegradable and non-hazardous ingredients. All the extracted plant ingredients are from sustainable sources. Most cleaning products are derived from petroleum-based resources and may contain harsh chemicals such as phosphates, caustics and other chemicals that can be hazardous to the user and the environment.

We’re still developing this range and would love to hear your comments about improvements we could make, new products, sizes etc.

I just got samples of the laundry liquid and washing-up liquid from my local wholefood/fresh food workers co-op and I used the laundry liquid this morning. I wish the sample bottle had included instructions, but I just settled on using as much liquid as I do with my current detergent. The smell was a really lovely surprise and, despite it seeming very runny compared to what I’m used to, the Suma sample seems to have done a fine job of cleaning. I like the better than most eco and ethical credentials for this product, as well as the UK-based production but I would need to have bulk refills of this product available in my area (Sheffield) before I would consider switching. The thought of buying unnecessary packaging just to get at the product inside isn’t something that sits well with me. All in all, though, seem like a very promising new range.

    Dear All,

It is with regret that I bring you news that we are unlikely to see the first delivery of our new ecoleaf facial tissues before the end of January.

I’ve been using the Fabric Conditioner for a while now, but the last bottle that I have bought is Un-usable. It is so thick, it’s like PVA glue, and has clogged my machine. Something has definitely gone wrong in the manufacture.

I have searched this site for a “customer services” link, but that does not exist. So I’m airing my complaint in public in the hope that someone from the company will get in-touch with me.

CUSTOMER SERVICES guys, it makes a great deal of difference and you don’t get complaints posted on your blog

    Product batch number: 915270

  • Paul C@Suma says:

    Hi James
We at Suma appreciate you getting in touch about the fabric conditioner. We have had some stability problems on a couple of batches of the Fabric Conditioner and are in the process of rectifying the problem. Moving forward we will be introducing a new formulation hopefully for May 2010 to avoid any problems in future.
In the meantime please accept our apologies and if you email me at with your contact details I will send you out some free fabric conditioner that is not affected.

Apologies for not being able to find our customer services number, it is on our contact us page, but under the heading customer information, as this is what we call our customer services department. We’ll change the heading on our site to ‘customer information / customer services’, as this makes it a lot clearer and easier to find when using the search tool.

Good to see you’re introducing new products. Have always liked your products as they’re simple in design and clean well, meaning they’re low cost but do a good job.

  • Phil says:

Great to see a new environmentally friendly cleaning range coming on to the market. Just a few questions.

What environment certifications does the range have, or what plans do you have here?

    Is the range hypoallergenic?

Is it possible for customers to refill, as we try to minimise our use of plastics? If not, any plans for this option?

The only product I am not so taken by, is the hand soap, as it looks rather industrial in appearance. Sorry.

Thanks. Looking forward to your reply.

  • Tania says:

Is your Eco Leaf range available in Denmark, or do you have any plans to sell it here? If it is, where may I find it?

  • paulc says:

    Hello Tania
Unfortunately they are not available in Denmark
at the moment but our export team are working on it. If we
have success I will post the deatils.

  • Frytz says:

Hello. We are a vegan store In madrid. any distributor in Spain for your vegan ecoleaf products?

  • Sarah says:

Hi. I really like using your productss. I have switched from Ecover to use Ecoleaf toliet cleaner, washing up liquid and clothes washing liquid. I bought 5 litre bottles so that I could refill my smaller bottles. Are you doing any refills yet?

  • Paul Collins says:

    Hi Sarah
Regarding the toilet cleaner we are looking into
the possiblility of doing a 20l refil size, as we have
had a few people ask about the possiblity. Once we think
it is viable then we will post details on our website.
    Thank you for your post.

  • Paul says:

Great products but why not obtain a third party certification, to truly demonstrate it’s environmntally friendler. For example the EU Ecolabel, which appears on lots of cleaning products now – see

  • Andrew says:

I have used the Ecoleaf Washing Up Liquid and the Laundry Liquid and have found them just as good as any other ‘Eco’ label I have tried. Great work Suma!

  • Amanda says:

Hi Suma I’m a registered childminder and mum to a 4 year old son and I switched to Ecoleaf about a year ago and love it, my wholefood shop in Swindon, Wiltshire offer refills which is fantastic and saves plastic. Any chance you’re developing dishwasher tablets and rinse aid?

  • Paul Collins says:

    Hello Amanda
You’ll be please to know we are in the process
of developing ecoleaf dishwasher tablets with the aim to launch
them either in the new year or March 2011. I should have some
samples pre christmas and would like to ask if you would like to participate in customer testing of this product? also we will
look at the possiblities of rinse aid. Please email me at if you would like to try the samples.

  • jean says:

Hi – I live in Cornwall & recently, on a day trip out, found a small shop in Torquay which stocked your laundry products.. They were really good to use, but now I’d like to know if there are any outlets in Cornwall that sell the Ecoleaf range, as travelling nearly 100 miles to stock up, defeats the object of being ‘green’..
    Any suggestions???

  • Danny says:

Hi Jean, think your best emailing/phoning our Customer Information Department.

  • Liz says:

We use Suma washing up liquid, liquid soap, multipurpose cleaner and toilet cleaner. All the products do the job and we are helping the enviroment. We purchase our Suma products from a Recycling shop in Whitley Bay and recommend the products to as many people as possible.

  • Filipa says:

I’ve been using the laundry liquid for a while and love it! Smells wonderful and does the job perfectly. Too bad here in Ireland couldn’t find this product in bulk yet…

  • Helen Dann says:

Hi! Could you please tell me if you use palm oil in any of the Ecoleaf products? Many thanks.

  • admin says:

    Hi Helen,

Thank you for your question. Our Ecoleaf range, which includes toilet cleaner, multisurface cleaner, laundry liquid, fabric conditioner, washing-up liquid, washing powder, stain remover and a concentrated washing up liquid, does not contain palm oil. Our glycerine hand soaps also don’t contain any palm oil, but our range of hand made soaps do. Please visit these pages on our website for more information

Just here finding out which products that I use contain palm oil, and hence which products I’ll no longer be buying. I was specifically looking for Ecoleaf laundry liquid. Read comments above with relief. Thanks.

  • Julie says:

Am desperate for your jumbo kitchen rolls please … they are THE best and smaller 2-roll pack not as good for some reason. When will they be back in stock? I rely on them heavily in my multi elderly cat home! Thanks v.

  • Melanie says:

    Hi Julie,

Great to hear that you love our Jumbo kitchen rolls as much as we do, so I’m sure you’ll be as delighted as we are that they are now back in stock.

If there is anything else we can help you and your lovely pussy cats with just let us know.

    Thanks again

  • Karen Armstrong says:

I have just purchased a 5ltr bottle of Ecoleaf Laundry Liquid. Could you please tell me how much to use in a wash cycle. I live in Glasgow, and it’s a soft water area.

    Best Wishes,

  • Emma R says:

    Hi Karen,
Our recommendation is to use 30 ml for a small load or light soiling, or 60ml for heavy soiling and hard water. Happy washing!

  • Peter Upton says:

Hello – I wanted to leave feedback about Ecoleaf toilet paper. Without going into unnecessary detail, it is not strong enough!

For me to be interested in buying it again, I would need to know that it had been improved in quality so that it was not just absorbent, but, you know, STRONG! Like Andrex, only better.

    Hope this is helpful.

    Best wishes,

  • Earl says:

Great Idea. Love the fact the products are Vegan. I know several vegans who are passionate about animals and the environment. Will pass on details of your products.

  • Misty says:

How much ecoleaf powder do you use in your washing?

  • Danny says:

Hi Misty, thanks for your comment, 2 x 25m spoons fulls for a normal wash and 3 x 25m spoons full for heavily soiled wash.

  • If we wanted to buy 20L drums from you to offer a refill service to our customers, would you take empty drums back to be refilled and reused rather than our having to just send them for recycling?

  • admin says:

If you are delivered to by Suma truck, we have no problem in taking back the 20L drums and recycling them. We do this with many of out customers.

  • Liana says:

    Hi there,

I would like to know when will you have dishwashing tablets and rinse aid products introduced to your range? Last it was spoken about was in 2010 by the comments above but I haven’t seen any of these yet.

  • Sheree Hatton says:

Hi there – I will forward your request re: the new products to our Product Development team. Keep your eyes peeled! There may be some NEW Ecoleaf products coming soon!

  • Claire Sinclair says:

I was wondering if your Ecoleaf washing liquid and conditioner contain gluten or wheat? Please let me know. Thank you.

  • Frin Arnold says:

I have purchased some Ecoleaf laundry liquid from my local food/eco coop. there were no instructions as to qty per wash on the bulk vessel. I searched for an answer online and happened upon this forum.

Please can you advise qty in ml per wash.

    Many thanks
