World Vegan Day – 1st November
The 1st November is the 20th World Vegan Day, and this year it also marks the 70th Anniversary of The Vegan Society, and the term ‘veganism’.
The day was set up to bring vegans across the world together to celebrate animal rights, and advocate veganism and a healthy lifestyle. Eating a plant-based diet is increasingly recognised as being beneficial for both health and the environment. Plant-based diets are rich in protein, iron, calcium and other essential vitamins and minerals. The plant-based sources of these nutrients tend to be low in saturated fat, high in fibre and packed with antioxidants. A study published in July by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences showed that livestock production is among the most destructive forces driving climate change: it degrades air quality, pollutes waterways, and is the single-largest use of land.
These days being vegan is a lot more accessible, and lots of celebrities are realising the benefits too. Jennifer Lopez, Tobey Maguire, Mike Tyson, Jared Leto, Joaquin Phoenix, Moby, Woody Harrelson and Russell Brand to name but a few all lead a vegan lifestyle. So why not use this month to find out more about all the healthy and tasty vegan options out there? We stock over 5500 lines which are vegan, and you can check out The Vegan Society for information, or visit one of many events coming up where there will be samples galore!
