100% horse meat free burgers – No Horse, no Bull!
It has been widely reported that horse meat has been found in frozen beef burgers sold by the supermarket giant Tesco. Other supermarkets like Asda, Aldi, Iceland and Waitrose have also removed products from their shelves after tests confirmed that contaminated meat came from two Irish meat factories, abp food group and Liffey Meats.
Further investigation also revealed that up to 85% of 27 beef products tested were positive for pig DNA, which is not only misleading but a major issue for religious groups like Muslims and Jews who cannot consume pork.
On the 7th February, Findus revealed that up to 100% horse meat was found in their beef lasagnes.
With many reported cases and perhaps more to follow it all leaves a bit of a bad taste in your mouth, and raises concerns about the safety and quality of meat entering the food chain. But is there a way to avoid all this horseplay?
Many vegetarians and vegans will feel comforted that the horsemeat scandal does not affect them. Some consumers will indeed feel uncomfortable about the thought of eating horse labelled as beef, and will challenge and rethink their attitude to eating meat entirely.
One of the rising trends in UK food culture is vegetarianism. How far this has been influenced by recent food safety scares is impossible to say. What is certain, however, is that more people are cutting out meat and animal products from their diet. Whether you are a vegetarian, vegan, or simply choose to eat less meat, you can be sure there is no horse meat in our top 10 best selling vegetarian burgers.
