Suma Presents: Exploring co-operative democracy with Beau Bulman

Published: 12/12/2024

We’re excited to share the latest episode of Punchcard podcast, featuring our very own Beau Bulman, one of Suma’s People Development Coordinators. As a worker-owned co-operative with over 200 members, practising direct democracy is at the heart of what we do – and it’s no small task.

In this episode, Beau dives into the challenges and rewards of running a co-operative of our size. They discuss how we approach member recruitment, induction, and fostering a culture of collaboration and accountability. From navigating compromises to strengthening participation, Beau sheds light on the strategies we use to sustain our co-operative principles in a modern and dynamic workplace.

We’ve also shared our seven internal co-operative principles – guidelines we developed to complement the International Co-operative Principles. These reflect our ongoing commitment to staying true to our values while adapting to the practicalities of co-operative life.

This podcast is a must-listen for anyone interested in the inner workings of Suma or curious about how democratically run organisations can thrive. Join Beau and Callum from Punchcard as they explore what it means to cultivate democracy and collective responsibility.
