I also work on an allotment but sadley haven't had much time this year due to major house renovations and of course work! It is a great pity as we normally enter Calderdales Allotment Competition and won 2nd prize in Calderdale last year.

I will admit there is nothing better than from the ground to the plate freshly picked and eaten in 3 or 4 hours and of course we grow organic too. Maybe later on in the year I will get going with growing again could probably over winter some vegetables. In the meantime I may just grow some easy vegetables in amongst my sweet williams or even in pots.

I too have lived in Elland and have tried to support all the local little shops, walking from Briggate up the hill into the town often took me hours as I would stop and talk to most of the shopkeepers prefering to buy from them.

I love homemade chutney but have never made it so good luck with that. Have you got a good recipe for homemade pickled onions as I failed to get mine to go crunchy, they went all soft and soggy?!

Keep up the good blogs they are enlightening and so very interesting.

Just made this on a whim. Lovely 'grown-up' cake, not too sweet. We're also soy free, so used chocolate oatly in place of the soya milk. Also makes 24 cupcakes :)

I use a lot of tinned beans/chickpeas and tinned tomatoes - I really appreciate the convenience on days when I don't have a little extra time. I too would be happy to pay a small premium for BPA-free tins.

Various regulatory authorities say that there is no evidence that consuming a small amount of BPA is unsafe. However, they seem to agree that is not the case for babies and children.

For women who are pregnant, or for those who are preparing food for young children, it would be very helpful to have a BPA-free option available.

Thanks for your feedback Beccy, I'm pleased that my blog has managed to cheer you up a bit! It's a shame about your allotment. Are you familiar with CSA (community supported agriculture)? As far as self-sufficiency goes this is a good halfway house; it's like a farming cooperative arrangement where you pay a subscription and your local farm sends you veg regularly, and with some schemes you also go and help out with the planting and harvesting. http://www.soilassociation.org/communitysupportedagriculture

Best wishes

Hi Melanie,
I'm glad to hear your feedback on our decaff coffee. Just to let you know you can now buy it on Amazon-

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Suma-Fairtrade-Organic-Decaffinated-Coffee/dp/B005DDO1IQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1336458925&sr=8-2

or if you want too find a local Suma stockist, call our customer support team (on the contacts page). Alternatively Grumpy Mule also have a Swiss Water decaff, so you could see if that is stocked locally to you.

Good luck on your hunt for the perfect decaff!

Any 'reads' like this are really helpful and inspirational to me at the moment. My health is poor and I've had to give up my allotment and any hope of a complete 'self-sufficient' life style. I came onto this site looking for info on Wholefood diets and any other useful information. Humour is what keeps me going, particularly on bad days such as this one is for me. The knitted bloomers bit made me smile so thank you :) I'm sure the chutney will be delicious! Enjoy.

Hi. It's mavellous to read that you are using local suppliers for food. Fortunately I work near Leicester Market. The produce and price is very good. After work (5pm) I cut through the market and the produce is practically been given away. I always chop up veg/fruit into portions and freeze it for later. The meat/fish market has a wide choice and a great price. Supermarkets have shoppers institutionalised. As QUEEN sang..."I want to break free". Well done Emma on your journey. PS I have a baking morning and freeze the goodies for later. Thank goodness the skill of baking and cooking is is being re-ignited.

I normally buy Lavazza decaff but I've only just found out about the dangers of the chemicals in decaff coffee. I love the flavour of it because it tastes like normal coffee. I hate the fact that it's full of chemicals!! Been buying organic decaff, hoping that would be better but now I know about the Swiss water method I need to find a new brand! Will look out for Suma but haven't seen it local to me.
