Suma PlayScape Opens
Play is currently top of the Government’s agenda but parents are growing more and more concerned about their children’s safety outdoors. Eureka! The National Children’s Museum and Suma Foods have confronted the issue and are pleased to announce the opening of a new Outdoor PlayScape.
Andrew Mackintosh, Suma’s PR Manager says: “Suma is passionate about health and well-being and our partnership with Eureka! encourages this through play. This is a new direction of community investment and one which we are very excited and proud to be a part of.”
The PlayScape will provide a space for child-led, free play for children of all ages in a natural environment. This will open in the grounds of the pioneering museum in Halifax, West Yorkshire on National Playday, Wednesday 6 August 2008. The PlayScape is the first part of a move by Eureka! to build on existing opportunities at the children’s museum for outdoor play.
According to Play England, 80% of children under 18 prefer to play outdoors and the PlayScape at Eureka! will address this preference. The space is designed to reflect nature and will include spaces to run, leap, hop, hide and climb. The PlayScape will be built using natural materials and the creative use of re-cycled industrial products.
Eureka!’s Play & Learning Director, Rebecca Johnson, says: “Play has been at the heart of Eureka! since the museum opened in 1992. We see play as a natural, child-directed way for children to learn new concepts and to develop the skills that provide the basis for success in life. Our new outdoor PlayScape will be a physical manifestation of this philosophy and will give children the chance explore, take risks and develop their imaginations.”
