Coeliac Awareness Week

Coeliac Awareness Week is between the 8th – 14th May, which helps to raise people’s understanding of the disease and the profile of gluten-free alternatives.

Coeliac UK

Coeliac UK are an independent charity helping people living without gluten to live happier, healthier lives. They provide their 60,000 plus members with trustworthy advice and support, funding critical research into coeliac disease, working with healthcare professionals to improve diagnosis and fighting for better availability of gluten free food.

The Gluten Freevolution Campaign

Coeliac UK are on a mission to improve gluten free food make living gluten free easier. They want to see more choice for those eating out on a gluten free diet and to make sure their experience is a good one. They want to show food and catering businesses just how much demand there is for gluten free food and how easy it can be to achieve with a little help.

Coeliac UK are asking the public to support the campaign to achieve the following aims:

  1. More gluten free options from small and medium sized food businesses, especially independent restaurants, pubs, local cafes and local takeaways.
  2. A wider range of reasonably priced pre-packaged gluten free food for those busy and on the move, particularly at work, study or out at sports or entertainment venues.
  3. Gluten free options for your journey whether by train, plane or ferry.
  4. Nutritious gluten free food when you’re staying or visiting hospital, when in need of care or going to school.
  5. More gluten free Asian food, such as Chinese, Thai and Indian. And more options in Italian, British and American venues.
  6. Gluten free vegetarian options.

Suma Worker’s Favourite Gluten-Free Alternatives

We are lucky to be a supplier of so many amazing products that are naturally gluten-free options, plus some specially made for those who are gluten intolerant. Here’s some of our Suma worker’s favourites:

Savoury Pancakes: Ri makes a mean savoury pancake from Suma Gram and Teff flours. A great idea for a quick and simple snack. Amrit uses an alternative flour for her pancakes, Suma Organic Coconut flour.

Nakd Bars: Emma is a big fan of Nakd bars, especially the Cocoa Orange one. They are made without gluten since they just contain fruit, nuts, cocoa and natural flavour. Somehow they manage to taste like a naughty treat but are actually really wholesome, so it’s the best of both worlds!

Amy’s Kitchen Soups: Katharine loves Amy’s Kitchen Quinoa, Kale and Red Lentil Soup, for a nourishing and warming quick meal. For a treat she indulges in Prewitts Rich Triple Chocolate Cookies, which pair perfectly with a cuppa!

Easy Bean Moroccan Chickpea Crispbreads: Nat’s favourites. She tops them with hummus or roasted vegetables, and dips into pesto (try Suma’s Organic Pesto Rosso).

Suma’s Nut Roast Mix: A firm favourite with Ross H’s family. As well as being gluten-free it’s also vegan, and helps to make a delicious Sunday lunch.
