We’ve only gone and done it! Suma wins ‘Employer of the Year’ at the annual Grocer Gold awards.

We are all extremely excited here at Suma HQ! Why, we hear you ask? Well, at Tuesday night’s Grocer Gold award ceremony down in London we were selected as ‘Employer of the Year!

One reason why we’re so happy is that the Grocer Gold awards are some of the most prestigious awards in the food and drink industry, therefore we’re extremely honoured and proud that we have been recognised, especially considering other nominees included companies such as Lidl, Aldi and Bidvest.

Another reason we’re so happy is because we are a workers’ co-operative. Being able to show other companies that we can win an award for doing things differently to the traditional hierarchical business structure is fantastic. Of course we are all used to it here at Suma, being Europe’s largest single-pay employer and the UK’s largest worker co-op has many benefits, but it is good to have this recognised on such a scale. Being a worker co-op means we’re unique. Uniquely managed, unique to work for, and for our customers, unparalleled levels of satisfaction and service. Happy workers means happy customers! This working method sets us apart from others in our sector.

We hope that other companies sit up and take note! Worker co-ops are a great business model and can be very successful – just ask any one of our 150+ members!
