Eat Beans- Give Beans (now finished)

During Jan and Feb, for every case of Suma catering baked beans we sold, we gave a case to one of 4 local organisations who work with donated food and supplies for those in need. This offer has now closed, but we’re leaving this article here so you can read about the wonderful work the charities do.

Suma Helping Charities To Help And Support The Community

Food store at Welcome CentreThe four centres all operate slightly differently, but all have the same basic principles of preventing good food going to landfill, whilst providing help and support to their community. Our very own Becs caught up with Karen from the Huddersfield Welcome Centre to find out more about what they do.

“The Welcome Centre has been going for 20 years, long before ‘foodbanks’ were in the media. It is more than just a food bank; we stock toiletries, towels, bedding, clothes and even kitchen equipment. We also provide a listening ear and information about where to get further help.” explained Karen.

Backed by an amazing network of organisations who donate regularly to them, they also have various allotment groups who provide fresh produce, and students at Huddersfield Student Union grow vegetables for them too. Every year when the local students leave their halls of residence, volunteers from the centre do a huge sweep and collect all the good quality kitchen utensils left behind. Individuals, schools, local businesses and faith organisations also donate goods.

Food store at Welcome CentreIn the last 6 months they gave out 866 food packs to families and 93 to couples. People are only given a pack if they are referred to the centre by one of the many organisations and agencies they work with, such as Job Centre, Mental Health Services, GPs and Social Services. Volunteers at the centre make up the food packs which have enough supplies in for one week, and are tailored as much as possible to individual service users.

Karen told Becs that the types of people they meet vary and the reason they find themselves is rarely one simple reason. Job loss, debt, eviction, homelessness, violence, benefit problems, drug and alcohol abuse or mental and physical health issues can all play their part. The charity aims to provide short term help for those in crisis, to prevent that crisis turning into a tragedy.
