Co-operative of the Year 2014: Suma Wholefoods
Suma Foods has been awarded the title of “Cooperative of the year 2014” in an annual award open to over 6000 cooperative businesses.
The decision was announced at Co-operatives UK AGM, held on Friday 27 June at Town Hall, Birmingham.
The awards are held annually as part of Co-operatives Fortnight and celebrate excellence, innovation and ethics in business as well as the achievements of the UK’s most pioneering and inspirational co-operators.
Dan Norvell, Suma PR spokesman said, “We are obviously delighted to have been recognised as innovators within the coop movement. Our cooperative status is very important to us and ensures that all workers are able to take an active part in running Suma, as well as reaping the rewards of a successful business”.
Commenting on the award, Ed Mayo, Secretary General of Co-operatives UK said: “I would like to congratulate Suma on their award. They are worthy recipients and are an excellent example of a thriving, successful and innovative worker owned and managed co-operative. I wish them every success with future endeavours.”
At Suma we supply a range of around 7000 natural food products and are market leaders in the wholesale natural grocery market. Founded in 1976, we have been operating from Elland since 2001. We are also the largest single pay organisation in Europe with all 190 workers earning the same hourly rate regardless of whether they are picking orders, working in personnel or developing new products. Last year saw another record-breaking set of accounts as Suma turned over £34 million with sales throughout the UK, and to over 50 countries internationally.
