Carishea – Trading Fairly from Ghana to Scotland

Submitted by on June 20, 2013 – 10:17 am2 Comments

The nut of the African shea tree is the source of rich and creamy shea butter, which boasts excellent moisturising and skin soothing properties. However, our new range of shea butter products from Carishea have a lot more going for them than simply being great for your skin.

Carishea are a truly unique business. Many companies strive to offer a fair deal to producers in the developing world, but Carishea also prioritise their workers closer to home. Carishea is part of Trade Right International (TRI), a registered Community Interest Company. TRI trade internationally to help disadvantaged people earn a living, then use their profits to fund development in the communities in which they operate.

Carishea- shea nuts harvested in Ghana

Shea trees grow wild throughout the savannahs of Africa and bring many natural benefits to the environment. Harvesting the trees ensures they maintain their worth not only to the economy, but also to Africa’s fragile environment.

In Ghana, TRI is based in the Bulisa District of the Upper Eastern Region where it has helped to form a network of local women who harvest the wild shea nuts. By pooling their resources, the workers have been able to arrange a local pickup of their collective harvests. This means they no longer have to walk 3-4 hours to the market with their heavy loads.

Ghanaian workers are guaranteed a living wage and their pay structure eliminates any wage chasm between workers and managers. More than 1,000 women are engaged in harvesting shea through TRI, earning twice as much as they did previously. In addition, worker consultation ensures that the company’s generous community investments can be channeled to where they are most needed- usually this means local health and education initiatives.

Carishea- social benefits for workers in Scotland

In Scotland, TRI have a soap factory in Greenock, Inverclyde. Working in partnership with an addiction rehabilitation centre and the Scottish Prison Service, TRI are building a unique and creative employability programme. ‘TRI is Fair,’ says founder Trev Gregory, ‘because we go beyond the normal concept of fair trade. We ensure a good wage for the people we work with, but we go further by giving back. Through careful assessment and local worker consultation, we give back into the communities we trade with. This can be up to 50% of our profits. This makes us a different type of business- a revolutionary business!’

Carishea products

Aside from being an innovative social business, Carishea’s products are also wonderfully moisturising and luxurious. The range of whipped balms and body washes are made using 100% natural ingredients, so no SLS or parabens here. Their high shea butter content and blend of essential oils will leave you feeling nourished and smelling lovely. A real treat for your skin!

Whipped Body Balms 100ml

These balms contain a luxurious 80% shea butter. They have a light texture which melts easily into the skin, and there are four tempting fragrances to choose from. Shea Joy is our favourite- one sniff and you’re transported to an exotic rainforest! There’s also an unscented version if you prefer a fragrance-free pampering.

Body Washes 250ml

Carishea body washes create a rich creamy lather thanks to the 50% shea butter content coupled with glycerine for added bubbles. They come in a range of natural fragrances to match the body balms, so you can buy the matching balm and layer up on fragrances to smell delicious.
