The Manuka Miracle
Most types of honey contain a naturally occuring element that has antibacterial properties and is thought to promote good health, but this element is often destroyed before we can reap the nutritional benefits. Manuka honey, however, exhibits a naturally occurring antibacterial property known as Non-Peroxide Activity (NPA). NPA is special because it remains the same even under the type of adverse conditions found in the digestive system. But not all Manuka honeys exhibit non-peroxide activity, so make sure you look out for NPA or UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) on the label to ensure you’re getting the real thing.
The unique bio-active compounds in Manuka honey are attributable to its source – the Manuka bush (Leptospermum scoparium). This plant is found in the green hills of New Zealand and has long been treasured by the Maori for its medicinal properties. You too can get these benefits by mixing Manuka honey into your favourite hot drink, drizzling it over porridge, or just eating it straight from the spoon.

The higher the rating, the greater the amount of NPA.
