Supporting Fairtrade in style – Suma hosts a pop-up veggie restaurant
This Fairtrade Fortnight we decided to push the boat out and host a three-course Fairtrade dinner in our very own Suma canteen.
With the help of a few candles, fairy lights and a bit of mood music our humble canteen was transformed into an atmospheric dinner venue for our guests. Diners included some of our local customers, partners and some local press representatives came along too.
Dessert was a rich chocolate and coconut torte, complimented by tart mango coulis and delicious Cream O’ Galloway Fairtrade ice cream (XL166). All of this was washed down with Chilean Fairtrade wines, Los Troncos Carmenere (RS112) and Sauvignon Blanc (RS113).
While guests enjoyed a post-dinner coffee, Suma Chocolate Buyer Jenny gave an engaging presentation about her recent visit to producers of Divine Chocolate in Ghana (Kuapa Kokoo) and her experience of the benefits that Fairtrade brings to African cocoa growers. Kuapa Kokoo is unusual because the cooperative is the majority shareholder in Divine, so a big chunk of the profits go back to farmers through the coop. This gives farmers a share of the money raised from sales of the finished product as well as from the sale of the raw materials.
Last year sales of Fairtrade certified products defied a double dip recession to soar 19%, reaching £1.57bn. Here at Suma we stock an impressive range of nearly 700 Fairtrade products, many of which are our Suma branded like our Fairtrade spices, tinned beans and dried fruits. We are big supporters of the Fairtrade movement because as an ethical worker cooperative, fair and transparent trading relationships are a big part of what we’re about.
Feedback from the event
It seems like the event was a roaring success, and being able to put on these events is thoroughly enjoyable and makes us feel proud to be part of Suma. We also had some lovely comments back from our guests:
What a great idea. Thank you to all involved for an enjoyable evening. Inspirational food and good company a chance to catch up with old friends and make some new ones. – Adrian Midgley
Just wanted to say thank you very much for inviting myself and my friend to your Fairtrade evening on Friday – it made a lovely change and was great to meet other Fairtraders. All the Suma people were welcoming and lovely and nothing was too much trouble. – June Bingham
