A New Era For Greenpeace with the Rainbow Warrior III

Submitted by on November 15, 2011 – 9:56 amNo Comment

Last week, celebrations on the south bank of the Thames marked the inaugural visit of Greenpeace’s new campaigning ship to the UK, and the 40th anniversary of the birth of Greenpeace.

The purpose-built eco-ship, the Rainbow Warrior III, sailed her maiden voyage from Germany in October and visited London to join the celebrations. The evening was a great success, and was further enhanced by a performance from the ship’s deck by the band the Good, the Bad and the Queen; an all-star musical collaboration from Damon Albarn, Tony Allen, Paul Simonon and Simon Tong.

The ship is an impressive sight docked on the Thames with Tower Bridge as her backdrop, but even so there is much more to it than meets the eye. Every detail of the ship is crafted with sustainability in mind, from the silicon-based paint on her hull to the FSC wood of her cabins, to the onboard recycling systems and biological sewage treatment. 90% of the ship’s power is generated by the sun and wind and it has a revolutionary mast design, allowing her to carry more sail. Vitally for Greenpeace, the ship has all of the latest digital equipment allowing broadcasts and communications from remote locations around the world.

The Rainbow Warrior III is the third vessel to travel to countless places around the world on her mission to defend the planet. Her predecessor, the Rainbow Warrior II, has been handed over to a Bangladesh-based health charity to be refitted as a hospital ship.

Greenpeace is an independent global campaigning organisation that acts to change attitudes and behaviour, to protect and conserve the environment and to promote peace. With the help of the new Rainbow Warrior, Greenpeace will confront environmental criminals and expose environmentally destructive activities across the world.
