The importance of feeding birds over winter

Submitted by on January 4, 2011 – 1:52 pmNo Comment

“Feed the birds – Tuppence a bag”

In these freezing temperatures, birds that winter in the UK are desperate for food and fresh water. Many of our native birds stay around during the cold months and we also get winter visitors from Scandinavia.

We can’t manage “tuppence a bag” but Suma Bird Nuts, Luxury Wild Bird Food and Wild Bird Seed are very reasonably priced especially when bought in the larger packs.

The RSPB  recommend high fat foods including peanuts at this time of year as this helps the birds maintain their fat deposits and survive the very low night time temperatures.

Our suggestion is to put out little but often as this will help prevent the food getting frosted and inedible. Maybe regularly twice a day, morning and evening and the birds will then become accustomed to these feeding times.
