A Suma drivers uplifting day out
As a veteran Suma driver of twenty years and more I didn’t think there was much to get excited about another trip around a snowbound Cumbria in sub zero temperatures. Therefore imagine my astonishment as I rolled up outside Leven Valley Primary school with their first delivery.
I was met by the headmaster and a parent governor who explained that the order had been arranged and placed by the kids of year six as a special project! And sure enough there were the kids themselves lined up and eager to help unload the food.
The head master went on to say that this had grown into “a fantastic project ” because it wandered into so many related topics. From ordering food and produce on line to healthy foods, organic produce, Fairtrade and eco-friendly goods. Even the nature of Suma as a workers cooperative!
It was obvious to me that the children were getting a lot out of the experience and I unhesitatingly accepted the offer of a cup of tea and a chance to field any questions in the assembly hall. All the year six kids involved in the project were there and I explained as best I could how their order was collated and loaded for delivery and how Suma works as a co-op . On the whole this was the most rewarding delivery I have been involved with for years and a genuinely uplifting experience to carry me through the rest of the day.

The children have recently e mailed us with their comments regarding Suma and their very first delivery, here are a few of their comments:
“It was great fun sorting out the whole order, from researching Suma, to organising the food group and then sorting, processing and sending the orders out. It gave us real responsibility and therefore consequences.”
“It gave us the feeling that we were actually doing a proper job.”
“The website is attractive to look at and pleasant to navigate.”
“Overall, a very easy service to use. The delivery was very quick and it was really easy to order everything online.”
“Thank you for staying a while after the delivery and answering our questions. It helped us understand Suma a bit more to find out from somebody who is directly part of the company.”
We would like to say a big thank you to Leven Valley Primary School for their first order (and also for looking after our veteran driver John). We hope we have many years of uplifting days out.
