Little Valley Brewery

High in the hills, in a corner of West Yorkshire, master brewer Win van der Spek is taking stock of his very own little empire. Though he doesn’t look very much like a beer baron, the ales rolling out of his Little Valley Brewery are earning rave reviews from those who know a good tipple when they taste one.

littlevalleyAt the age of fifteen, Wim was busy perfecting his very first home brew and forming his own beer club with a couple of pals from school. A quarter of a century later, his ambition of setting up his own brewery has brought him to the sweeping moorlands above Cragg Vale near Hebden Bridge.

This has always been quite an active area for brewing and I knew that it had soft water, which is good for the brewing process, and important for the quality of the beer”, Wim says. “Though quite isolated, from here I can reach five million people in a thirty mile radius”.

At the moment we have the capacity to produce up to 3000 barrels a year, but it is all done cost effectively. With brewing there is always quite a lot of money involved but I have been able to keep the cost down”.

This is not to say that Wim has cut corners with his beers, nor has he abandoned his green principles. In keeping with the Little Valley ethos of staying in tune with the surrounding environment, the beers produced are all organic. Wim has recently been busy producing Suma’s range of organic beers.

Long Wall Mouse (RT215)SUM-BEER5
5% ABV

A bright, yellow beer with a pleasant taste and a smooth finish. Long Wall Mouse is a surprisingly mellow beer that’s lightly fruity and spicy. Made with top fermenting yeast, Pacific Gem and First Gold hops, this is most definitely an ale not a lager, however it is the ideal alternative for the more discerning lager drinker.

So why Long Wall Mouse? A local legend tells of a spectral mouse which is supposed to have lived in the Long Wall here in Elland that appeared, ghostly white, after the hours of dusk. It was said that whoever saw this squeaking portent of doom would meet some grave misfortune.

Mytholm Mist (RT213)
Mytholm Mist
4.5% ABV

A white hazy beer with aromas of coriander and lemon. Mytholm Mist is a refreshing drink with a fresh, classic finish, using hops originating from Hallertau, an area of Bavaria between Munich and Nurenberg; an ideal thirst quenching summer beer.

Mytholm means “meadow at the junction of two rivers” referring to the area of Hebden bridge where Colden Water meets the river Calder.

Elphin Brook (RT212)
4.2% ABV

Elphin Brook is a rich, red-brown beer, with a full and rounded body. Using three complementary hops, including Challenger and East Kent Goldings, this beer is crisp and fruity with a spice and lemon aroma that all goes to provide a delicate finish.

Elphin Brook is named for the brook which is the source of the water for the brewery which joins the river Calder at Mytholmroyd, the name originally meant “eel stream” however this like the rest of the beers are vegan and contain no eel based products

Penumbra Stout (RT214)
4.8% ABV
Rich black stout containing wheat malt, crystal malt and chocolate malt mixed with oats and wheat. Penumbra has a rich and creamy roasted flavour with aromas of orange, citrus and berry.

Penumbra comes from the Latin meaning “almost shadow” as in an eclipse, between regions of complete shadow and complete illumination, lies an area in which something exists to a lesser or uncertain degree.

Mixed Case (RT216)
Can’t decide which one of our Ales to try first? We’ve now introduced a mixed case, each one containing 3 bottles of the our four different varieties.
