Suma, Employer of the Year 2010 Finalist
Suma selected as a Finalist for Employer of the Year 2010
Suma workers cooperative from Elland, West Yorkshire, was selected as runner up finalist in The Grocer Magazine Gold Awards 2010 in the Employer of the Year category.
Bob Cannell, a member of Suma’s Personnel team, said: ” What an amazing honour to be recognised as an exemplary employer as a worker cooperative by this national institution. We were up against Tescos and Morrisons in our category and still came within a whisker of winning outright. ”
“It is not that long since our multi-skilled, equal status, self-managing working culture was considered a hippy dream. These days many of the big corporations are trying to copy us with their employee engagement programmes and such like.”
Suma is no stranger to prizes.
The wholefoods cooperative won The Grocer award for Specialist Wholesaler of the Year in 2009.
Said Bob ” Our success in these awards shows how worker coops can punch well above their weight in their industries. I think this is due to our superior cooperative culture. We use cooperative principles and the Cooperatives UK Worker Cooperative Code of Governance to inform our management processes. It clearly works for us as a business and as a cooperative.”
The candlelit presentation dinner and ceremony was held in the ancient Guildhall in the City of London on Wednesday 16th June. “It was like being on the Hogwart’s film set” said Bob.
The cooperative group won Green Supermarket of the Year and employee owned Waitrose won several awards including Grocer of the Year. A good night for democratically owned grocery businesses.
Full details will be published in The Grocer magazine this weekend.
