Suma Wacki Dog Pet Food gets Best Buy from Ethical Consumer Magazine
In the March/April 2010 issue of Ethical Consumer Suma pet food Wacki Dog is awarded Ethical Consumer Best Buy. Wacki Dog is a Vegetarian dry dog food mix brought to you in in 5kg and 15kg sizes by a Cooperative which does not believe in animal testing.
Other Suma products which have been awarded best buy by Ethical Consumer in the past include Suma margarines, beans, nuts, rice, honey, toilet paper, cooking oil, and cordial.
Ethical Consumer magazine compares manufacturers of different products and rates them by their ethical policies and standards. You can subscribe to detailed information via their Ethiscore website but there are also a range of free buyers guides available on the Ethical Consumer website. They consider different criteria when awarding an ethiscore including the product and its ingredients, a company’s ethics and policies on people, environment and animals.
Suma has had some interesting debate with the Ethical Consumer Team in the past about how they score companies (Ethical Consumer letters page November/December 2008). I was particularly interested in the fact that Suma was losing marks for not publishing an environmental/corporate responsibility report. My objection was that environmental reporting has become a green wash marketing tool and some impressive reports have been produced, at great cost, by some terrible companies. Its not so much what is said but what is not covered….
However the Ethical Consumer team rightly pointed out that no scoring system is going to be perfect and you have to start somewhere – Suma has since produced a report which can be viewed here:Suma corporate social responsibility report.
